Immigration laws in Los Cabos can be confusing for foreigners. In general, foreigners can stay in Mexico for up to 180 days on a tourist visa. After that, they must apply for a different type of visa if they want to stay longer. There are also restrictions on which types of activities foreign nationals can engage in while in Mexico. For example, it is not possible to work on a tourist visa. Therefore, anyone who wants to work in Mexico must first obtain the appropriate work visa.
Generally, pensioners or retirees can apply straightaway. However, they must prove sufficient monthly income or savings/investments to cover living expenses in Mexico. Proof of monthly pension, salary or monthly investment income that you have received for the last 6 months. Proof via pay stubs or financial statements showing at least 500 days worth of the Mexican minimum wage (141.70 pesos per day is minimum day).
Proof of financial stability via statements of investments, savings or checking accounts from the preceding 12 months. You are required to prove a monthly balance of approximately 20,000 days worth of the Mexican minimum wage.
Cabo San Lucas is located at the southern tip of Baja California. Here, as in the rest of the peninsula, the climate is arid; winter is sunny, with cool nights, around 13/14 °C (55/60°F), and pleasantly warm days, around 25/26 °C (77/79 °F). Spring is warm and sunny: daytime temperatures reach 29 °C (84 °F) already in April. Then Summer is warmer with temperatures from 30/35ºC (85/95ºF) and sometimes humid. The rainy season is from September to November. The rains will come and go rapidly but will a large volume of water. All in all it is a weather paradise.
Insurance on your property is available through many banks and companies in the Baja. It is not very expensive to have complete coverage. All companies are different but the avaerage is $180-225 USD per month for good coverage. It is all dependent on the property you own and the coverage you need.
The medical and dental care is comparable to the US but very reasonable. All facilities and hospitals are state of the art. Many of the facilities have doctors trained outside of Mexico and very well respected for their abilities.
